Good luck Cristopher from all the LAHH Team!!
Long Beach, CA - July 22, 2009 - Cristopher Hartsock became employed as a Light Duty Specialist for Los Angeles Habilitation House on April 20, 2009. After serving eight years in the Army, in the current conflict in Iraq, Hartsock could not find employment which led him to be homeless. Hartsock moved into the federally subsidized housing for Veterans within the Villages of Cabrillo, Long Beach, CA in September, 2008 after being homeless for two months.
Living within the Villages of Cabrillo, also the headquarters for Los Angeles Habilitation House (LAHH), provided the necessary stepping stones for Hartsock to interview for the custodial opening. Cristopher will be leaving LAHH in August to pursue a bachelors of arts in history at Glendale Community College. Quoting the President of Los Angeles Habilitation House, "the reason LAHH exists is to meet the need for employment experienced by persons with a disability, especially those people with mental disabilities. It is clearly evident through the experience Cris has lived, that once you get a job and successfully apply the technical aspects of the work, the doors of possibility are thrown wide open and anything becomes possible. We support Cris as he moves onto obtaining his college education through the GI Bill."

May 15, 2009 , LA Habilitation House Boot camp Graduation
From April 20 – May 1st, nine new recruits listened with attention as Guido Piccarolo, President – LAHH, discussed the philosophy and history behind custodial services and coached them through the proper usage of equipment. The nine recruits were recruited from the Harbor Regional Center, Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network, and through the Ticket to Work program. Los Angeles Habilitation House recently won a contract to clean the Harbor Regional Center in Torrance, CA. This contract requires two lite duty specialists, two vacuum specialists, one restroom specialist, and one utility specialist. Guido said, “one of the best things about Boot Camp is it gives me enough time to evaluate which specialty will fit each person in order that they excel. The genius of Boot Camp is the time given before we enter the field - like a professional basketball team in pre-season play.” Check the slideshow presented ad the graduation below.

What will the grant provide?
For $25,000 LAHH will employ 3 individuals to assist in the training of 33 disabled veterans to become contract close-out specialists .
What is the impact?
Moving individuals from homelessness to employment is not simple and while more veterans return from war with serious mental and physical barriers to work- the need for a solution is becoming more pressing. LAHH is seeking to bridge that gap! By giving 36 people the opportunity to train to become full-time contract specialists- we are not only affecting their lives, but the lives of their family, friends and fellow serviceman.
Thank you all!

May 20, 2009 - LAHH volunteered for “KaBOOM! Build Day Volunteers at Villages of Cabrillo
Here is the message from Brian D’Andrea, President of Century Housing: “Thank you one and all for your outstanding energy, enthusiasm, and remarkable craftsmanship in delivering a beautiful new playspace for our community’s children on Wednesday! It was an incredibly inspiring day and we are so appreciative of your efforts. This new playspace will provide a healthy, positive outlet for the hundreds of deserving children that are present on our campus on a daily basis. We should all feel proud about what we accomplished in a single day: transforming a vacant, overgrown, and underutilized lot into a vibrant and hopeful recreational space that will make an immeasurable difference in the lives of our community’s children and families for many years to come. Please enjoy the montage of photos that KaBOOM! has shared with us below. And, here’s a link to some photos from the Long Beach Press Telegram.
